Hi! My name is Julie and I am working as a Liaison Officer for the International Network for Cancer Research and Treatment (INCTR), an NGO focusing on cancer control in developing countries. You will find more information on INCTR activities at http://www.inctr.org.
As you may know, many cancer patients in low and middle income countries present at a far advanced stage, when it’s often too late to save their lives. Poverty, gender inequality, lack of education and health services are just a few reasons why very few women are screened in resource-limited nations. In Nepal, this problem is compounded by geographical isolation in rural areas.
To reach out to rural communities in the Kathmandu valley, INCTR Nepalese Branch organizes screening camps where women are screened for cervical and breast cancer. Results and necessary medications are provided on the spot, and patients with positive screening results are referred for follow-up. Self-examination workshops and cancer education sessions are also provided to local communities.
Our Nepalese colleagues told us that many women were happy to find that both the screening and medication were free of cost, as they would not have been able to afford them otherwise.
“To help us, please make a donation at http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/screen-nepali-women-for-cervical-and-breast-cancer A lot can be achieved with your help: as little as $10 will provide cervical and breast cancer screening for one Nepali woman. We have received enough donations to screen about 660 women so far and we are now aiming to screen 1000 women for important cancers in the Kathmandu valley in 2011!
We also need your help spreading the word. Just like Debbie, please share this opportunity with your colleagues, friends and family by forwarding them this message, sharing the above link on your blogs or social networks, using the tell-a-friend feature on the project page to email your network, or just bring us up in conversation.
Thank you very much on behalf of the entire project team,
Julie
